Yes — if the nail is in the tread, the hole is small, and the tire is otherwise sound, we can usually patch it the same morning at our shop on Central Street in Iva. If the puncture is in the sidewall or the shoulder, or the hole is bigger than a quarter-inch, that tire has to come off. That's the whole decision. Here's how we actually make it, the same way we would on our own trucks.
Can you drive on a tire with a nail in it?
Sometimes — just far enough to get to the shop. If the tire is still holding air and the nail is still sitting in the tread, leave the nail in. It's often what's plugging the hole. An easy 10–15 minutes down SC-81 or US-29 into Iva is usually fine if the tire isn't going soft under you.
Do not keep driving for days "to see if it goes down." Running a tire low can ruin one that was perfectly repairable. And do not yank the nail out in a parking lot. That's how a slow leak becomes a flat on the shoulder of 81.

When can a nail in a tire be patched?
A puncture is repairable when all of this is true:
- The hole is in the center of the tread, not the sidewall and not the shoulder (that rounded edge where the tread rolls into the side)
- The injury is 1/4 inch or smaller — a nail or small screw, not a gash
- The tire isn't already worn out, cracked from heat, or older than it should be
- There isn't another repair sitting right next to this one
- We can take the tire off the wheel and look at the inside
A plug shoved in from the outside in a parking lot is a get-you-home fix. It is not a real repair. The proper job is a combination plug-and-patch: we fill the injury and seal the inner liner from the inside. That's the industry standard, and it's the only way we'll send you back out on US-29.
When we will not patch it
This is the part some shops skip because they want the $25 and you off the rack. We won't do it when:
- It's in the sidewall or shoulder. Those areas flex constantly. A plug there can work loose at highway speed.
- The hole is bigger than 1/4 inch, or it's a slice instead of a clean puncture.
- Two holes are too close together. Overlapping repairs weaken the belt.
- The tire is already done. If you're at 2/32" or the rubber is cracked from South Carolina heat, a patch just delays the inevitable.
- It was driven flat. Once the sidewall has been pinched, the structure can be cooked even if it looks okay from the outside.

How much does a tire patch cost in Iva?
Most nails we can repair are $20 to $40, done the same morning while you wait or run an errand. That's a lot less than even a single used tire, and a lot less than sitting at a chain while they "inspect" it and try to sell you a set of four.
If the tire isn't repairable, you still get a straight answer before we start any work. If you've already got the spare on, roll in and we'll look at the damaged tire on the rack.
What should you do if you pick up a nail on SC-81?
- Don't pull the nail out.
- Check the pressure if you have a gauge. If it's still close to spec, drive easy to the shop.
- If it's going down fast, pull over somewhere safe, put the spare on, and call us.
- Skip the canned "fix-a-flat" if you can. That goo makes a proper internal patch harder — sometimes impossible.
