A nail in a tire does not automatically mean replacement. It also does not guarantee a safe patch. The location and size of the puncture, the tire’s condition and any damage from driving underinflated all matter. A proper decision requires an inspection, including the inside of the tire.
What should you do when you notice a nail?
Do not pull it out just to investigate: removing it may release air more quickly. Park safely and check for a visibly low tire, hissing or a pressure warning. If the tire is flat, badly damaged or unable to hold the recommended pressure, arrange roadside assistance instead of driving it to the shop.
A tire that looks inflated may still be losing air. A dashboard light cannot tell you whether the puncture is repairable. Describe the symptoms when calling for advice, including how far the vehicle has traveled since the warning appeared.
Which punctures may be repairable?
The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association repair guidance limits repairs to suitable injuries in the tread area, no larger than 1/4 inch, or 6 mm. Damage extending into the shoulder or sidewall is outside those limits. The tire must be removed from the wheel so its interior can be inspected.
The recommended repair fills the injury and seals the inner liner; an external plug by itself is not a complete repair. Tire-maker restrictions, previous repairs and the overall condition can rule out repair even when the hole appears small.
Why does driving on a low tire matter?
Driving underinflated can damage the tire internally. That damage may not be visible while it is mounted. Tell the technician if you drove on it flat, used emergency sealant or repeatedly added air. This history helps them inspect the tire properly.
Do not treat repeated pressure loss as normal. A puncture is one possible cause; a valve, wheel or bead-area leak may also need attention. The source should be located before choosing a repair.
When is replacement the better answer?
Shoulder or sidewall injuries, internal damage, excessive wear and other disqualifying conditions can make a tire unsuitable for repair. If replacement is needed, compare the correct size, load capacity and matching requirements for your vehicle. Some all-wheel-drive systems have specific limits on differences between tires.
