Most tire shops will quietly steer you toward whichever option pays them better. We have been doing this for 15 years on Central Street, and the honest answer is: it depends on your situation, and the difference can be hundreds of dollars either way.
Here is the breakdown we give our own customers in Iva and across Anderson County.
When used tires are the right call
A quality used tire with 7/32" or more of tread depth is safe, legal, and often barely broken in. Many of the used tires we stock came off vehicles that were traded in early, totaled with intact tires, or had a mismatched set replaced. We inspect every one for sidewall damage, age, plug history, and even wear before it goes on a customer's car.
Used tires make sense when:
- You are selling or trading the vehicle in the next 12 months
- You only need to replace one or two tires (not a full set) and want to match the wear of the existing ones
- The vehicle is a second car driven mostly in town, low annual mileage
- You are on a tight budget and need to be back on the road safely today
- You drive a less common size where new tires would be $300+ each
A set of four quality used tires from us typically runs $160 to $280 installed, depending on size and condition. A comparable new set is usually $520 to $900 installed.
When new tires are the only call
Some situations are not worth the savings. We will tell you straight up when you should buy new.
New tires are the right call when:
- You have a newborn or young kids in the car regularly
- You commute on I-85 or US-29 daily at highway speeds
- You tow a trailer, camper, or boat
- All four current tires are at end-of-life (a fresh matched set lasts longer and wears more evenly)
- You want the manufacturer's road-hazard warranty
- The vehicle is your only car and you depend on it for work
New tires last 50,000 to 70,000 miles with proper rotation. Quality used tires might give you 15,000 to 30,000. Do the math on cost-per-mile and new often wins if you keep the vehicle long term.
What we will never sell you
- Used tires older than 7 years from the DOT date code, regardless of tread
- Anything with sidewall bulges, plug failures, or interior damage
- A used tire when the situation honestly calls for new
